Santa Barbara Zoo
Brand Refresh, Brand Systems
The Santa Barbara Zoo rebrand reconnects with the community by spotlighting local wildlife conservation and Santa Barbara’s adventurous spirit.
A nature-inspired color palette, organic textures, and playful fonts transform the zoo’s identity, creating an inviting, memorable experience that reflects the community’s values on environmental stewardship and discovery.
The Strategy
Engaging visuals and conservation-driven messaging aim to bridge the gap between the zoo and its audience. The updated design invites visitors of all ages to explore and learn while emphasizing how their support safeguards local ecosystems—helping them see the zoo as an active partner in environmental stewardship.
Colors that Connect
The color palette was derived from nature and is used to distinguish between different categories within the zoo: birds, mammals, and reptiles/insects.
These high-contrast colors compliment delicate and textural elements of nature both within and outside the zoo walls.
The Take-away
In terms of deliverables, this was the largest branding project I have taken on. The strategy for the new identity came about through research, current brand audit, market trends, competition analysis, and market opportunities. I learned how to execute my strategy through several touchpoints: logo, color, typography, website, spatial, uniform, brand bible, and more.
